Ethan playing the piano

Piano Concerto No.1

Ethan David Loch

I originally conceived this piece as an exploration of how my mind works, structured around three distinct states.

The first movement depicts an internal fantasy world. Here, my choices have no real consequences. I can act without restraint. But this freedom comes with a cost: the emotional weight of these imagined struggles bleeds into my waking life. I learned that my own thoughts can be more confining than any external circumstance.

The second movement shifts to quiet reflection. I'm alone with my thoughts, listening to small sounds in silence. This should be peaceful, but instead I'm confronted with unanswerable questions: What's the point of all this? What am I supposed to be doing? These questions spiral outward into different directions of thinking, each one temporary and unsatisfying. By the end, I return to where I started, unchanged but slightly more accepting of that fact.

The third movement brings external reality: university, classes, social interaction, a party. It should be the most joyful section since I'm not caught in internal struggles. But here, my decisions actually matter, and that weight turns the celebration into anxiety. Later, after a moment alone, I'm joined by a flute that helps me find some confidence. This comes from a dream where I learned to think for myself rather than avoid conflict. The movement ends with a cadenza and a return to the opening theme, bringing the piece to a sense of resolution.

What I realized while writing this is that it's not just about how my mind works. It's also about what prevents me from moving forward. Across all three movements, there's a pattern: I get in my own way by needing to understand everything or control the outcome. Some things can't be explained, and some situations are beyond my control. In those moments, the only option is to trust and do what feels right. Of course, understanding this is far simpler than actually living by it.
